First time using colour in a while and so I decided to stick with two colours here: blue and red. I’d been doing a fair bit of mixing in the previous paintings, which in the world of black and white means you can blend till your hand snaps off. Introduce too many colours mixed with even a fraction of that ferocity and you’ve made mud, my friend. So I played it carefully and what I got was an electric yet soothing array of cool winds. To me, this one looks menacing. I began the painting from a black background, relying on its dark mounds as foundation. The luminous whites stand out in stark contrast and it is impossible to not find your eyes riding down, across, and back up the three main ribbons that frame the moody interior. From there you might pick up on two eyes staring back at you: one an impenetrable black, the other a sort of contorted moon that lights up a series of winding rivers twisting deep into the farthest point of the image where they conclude in a hazy horizon. Of the twelve others I put together in that time, this stands out for being the most “landscapey”. Many of my paintings already verge on psychedelic landscapes with traces of mountains, rivers, and trees discernible throughout but I prefer to resist the temptation of objective forms. Here I loosened my grip and let these images take shape and what we get is a strange, almost dream-like vision of a distant world — a cold memory soaked in shadow. I was trying to do something different but ultimately couldn’t keep up with all the excess paint I was adding on out of reckless ambition. So I smoothed it out and reverted to a slow, piece-by-piece process in which I applied generous slabs of paint in Lego-like formation. The colours are bright but subdued and I find the purples against the greens soothing. By no means a particularly large painting or a technical feat but a concoction of techniques both brand new and old, carved and smeared over a dizzying amount of paint. Part obsession part creative search this work began as what would have been a disastrous wedding gift had I not come to my senses in time. I let it sit for several months before painting over the whole thing. When that happened, it culminated quickly…or so I thought. I slept on it, came back to it the next day and found myself dissatisfied. So I did what everyone urges me to stop doing and painted over it again. About eight more times. The biggest factor pushing me forward wasn’t a search for perfection but fear that the best painting was buried five layers below. That didn’t happen. What we get is a sort of flooding of water and/or clouds over glistening volcanic rock. While using many of the same techniques as the previous painting this one is already a bit of a departure. I tightened the grip on its likeness to landscapes, omitting more objective forms in favour of motion. The scene, like its predecessor, relies heavily on its meandering canals for movement, though this time the turns are sharper and more jagged. It snakes and turns, coils and splits, and at moments of intersection flowers out into the expanse around it. In the pink there are subtle blends throughout suggesting lakes and mountains, caves, islands, and geysers. It was completed in one swift and impulsive session, just enough time to capture the energy I had in that moment but not too long to second guess myself.
